Summary of Responsibilities

The VP of HR serves as the strategic HR business partner to the executive team, helping the CEO, COO and team to drive a transformation agenda for the organization and to build a strong leadership team that can unlock Catalyst’s people and culture potential.  


This role will define and execute a people strategy that enables Catalyst to build a diverse, high-performing workforce that is ready and committed to helping Catalyst achieve its mission.  The key areas of focus include:

  • Growing people and teams with the capabilities needed for today and tomorrow
  • Strengthening the capability of leaders at all levels in Catalyst

This position will manage 1-2 people, with payroll and additional support provided by a PEO.


Essential Functions

  • Partner with senior leaders to build comprehensive strategic workforce plans, and then translate these needs into concrete HR policies, practices, and programs
  • Establish and manage highly integrated talent processes, including performance management, development, succession, and performance-based compensation
  • Leverages Catalyst’s DEI research and best practices internally to enable Catalyst to serve as a role model in terms of cultivating respect, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
  • Maintain a pulse on the organization, regularly seeking employee perspectives and providing insight to leadership on ways to improve the overall employee experience
  • Develop and manage leadership development strategy that helps strengthen the leadership skills of current leaders; execute tactics to help increase the effectiveness of leadership teams
  • Defines and tracks appropriate measures to evaluate the health of the organization and success of people-focused initiatives. Accountable for driving performance to agree upon metrics
  • Oversees outsourced PEO HR administration, including benefit programs, payroll administration, HR systems, and benefit broker relationships
  • Manages and resolves employee relations issues and conducts effective and thorough investigations, as required


Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Minimum 15 years of experience managing the spectrum of HR functions (recruiting, payroll, compensation and benefits, learning and development, diversity and inclusion, employee engagement, etc) and a track record of looking for ways to manage program costs and provide employee program solutions that are competitive in the nonprofit industry
  • Must have the gravitas to be a truth teller while also serving as an informal coach by building trusting relationships across the organization. Must speak up for what they believe in and have the humility to listen to others
  • Effective communicator, with an ability to influence at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Balance of strategic, big picture thinking with demonstrated ability to deliver results
  • Strong project management and execution skills
  • Strong leader who builds capability in the team, sets a high bar of excellence, and inspires others to be the best they can be
